Black Guerilla Family: Profile

The Black Guerilla Family (BGF), which is  made up of African American members, was formed at San Quentin State Prison in California, in 1966, by former Black Panther member George L. Jackson. The BGF is the most politically oriented of the major prison gangs. They were formed as a  revolutionary organization with the goals of eradicating racism, struggling to maintain dignity in prison and the overthrow of the United States government. The group is extremely anti-government and anti-official. This mentality is often depicted in their symbolism. BGF has a very strict death oath that requires a life pledge of loyalty to the group.  In recent years, on the East Coast, Black Guerilla Family members utilized Bloods gang members to commit organized burglaries of affluent neighborhoods in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York (Long Island).
