Fresno Bulldogs: Profile
History
Fresno Bulldogs, also known as “Bulldogs,” took their name from the California State University at Fresno (CSUF) athletic teams which were called Bulldogs. The color of the jerseys and team clothing of the California State University is red. The Fresno Bulldogs are an offshoot of the F14s (also known as the F14 Bulldogs) which was a prison gang that was not affiliated with Nortenos or Surenos.
Development
Fresno Bulldogs originated in Fresno, California, in the late 1960s. The Bulldogs are now the largest Hispanic gang operating in central California, with membership estimated at 5,000 to 6,000. The Bulldogs are one of the few Hispanic gangs in California that claim neither Sureños (Southern) nor Norteños (Northern) affiliation. The Bulldogs do, however, associate with Nuestra Familia (NF) members, particularly when trafficking drugs. The street-level distribution of methamphetamine, marijuana and heroin is a primary source of income for gang members. In addition, members are involved in other types of criminal activity including assault, burglary, homicide, and robbery.
In November 2006, the City of Fresno launched Operation Bulldogs, which was an anti-gang initiative targeting the Bulldogs street gang. Again in August 2007, the county’s gang task force targeted the Bulldogs and 42 other street gangs in the Fresno area resulting in hundreds of arrests.
