Zulu Nation: Profile
History
The Zulu Nation gang was created in New York City in the 1980’s after several members of the Universal Zulu Nation Hip Hop Social Group separated to form a gang and recruit new members. The gang leaders enticed new members by telling them they were members of a large social group dedicated to promoting Hip Hop and parties. They charged membership dues and issued identification cards. As the 1990’s emerged, Zulu Nation members accepted their role as gangsters and aggressively recruited. By 1995, Zulu Nation members numbered nearly 100 in New York City.
Development
Zulu Nation leaders recruited throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. By 1997, Zulu Nation membership reached nearly 2000. Today, Zulu Nation conducts cultural sessions and utilizes Nation of Islam literature to recruit members into the gang. Their membership is comprised of all ethnic groups. Zulu Nation has no affiliation to other gangs or coalition alliances.
